If you want to learn about fluidized beds for practically any purpose, this book is an excellent start, and also an excellent ongoing reference manual. This book is also remarkable since it was written in part by Octave Levenspiel, who is famous for writing a couple of more or less entry level books to chemical reactor design, The Chemical Reactor Omnibook, and Chemical Reaction Engineering. The Omnibook is particularly friendly and amazing (handwritten!!), and depicts Levenspiel to be a really intelligent, sensitive, witty, and unique person. The sub-sections are listed too. Fortunately, the catalog keeps them all straight for you. The content of the book covers a broad and comprehensive spectrum of aspects of fluidized beds. The first two chapters are fairly non-technical, and discuss generally what fluidized beds are, and their history of use. Chapters 3, and 5-7 describe the gritty details of the fluidization fluid dynamics itself. Chapter 4 is about the gas distributers that all fluidized beds require, and how to design them. Chapter 8 is about high-velocity fluidization, after you push a bubbling fluidized bed up into being a turbulently fluidized bed. Chapter 9 is about particle mixing and segregation. Chapters 10-13 are about heat and mass transfer in fluidized beds. Chapter 14 is about what to do when the particles are changing size over time. Chapter 15 is about circulating fluidized beds. Finally Chapters 16-18 are about designing chemical reactors with fluidized beds inside them. Together, this info is wonderfully comprehensive. It seems like everything one could ever want is here, and it is all well discussed, and reasonably accessible to a general engineering audience. If you are looking to get started in fluidized beds, buy this one first, in the interest of saving your money.
If you are looking to do some serious heavy lifting with fluidized bed science, like using fluidized beds to get your PhD, running a startup company around a new fluidized bed technology, or doing fundamental research in fluidized beds, consider also getting the Geldart book.Unfortunately, poor quality printing. I didn't expect this poor quality in a book from Butterworth-Heinemann. It looks similar to a scan done with inadequate resolution. It's all legible, just not crisp. From my perspective this is unacceptable in a hard bound book currently in print bought from the publisher. I'd give the authors 5 stars for the content, but the publisher 2 stars for the quality of the final printed product. End result 3 stars.Easy to follow (for the most part). I've personally didn't know anything about fluidization and with this book I've been able to build a model to predict my company's process behavior, really, it is that good. Granted, in order to be able to take full advantage of this book you must have a solid math and science background. Otherwise you will probably struggle a bit with it. If you are an engineer trying to learn fluidization this is the book for you.Every fluidziation field practioner needs to have a copy.It is still up to date.Its treatment of theoretical formulations are presented without excessive details or complex derivations, which makes it ideal for field engineers to get a good understanding of the basic principles and apply them with confidence in the light of numerous practical examples. This is because the amount of soap molecules adsorbed on monomer droplets decrease the number of soap micells which produce polymer particles in the induction reaction region. Once the emulsion is prepared in a specified condition, the agitation intensity during reaction does not affect the polymerization rate. The amount of soap adsorbed on monomer droplets was estimated from the reaction rate in the zeroorder region by assuming Smith and Ewart''s theory, and was correlated empirically with the surface area of monomer droplets at the moment of emulsion preparation.
In order to apply the same idea for approximate estimation of the effectiveness factor of the porous catalyst, the effective diffusivity was defined for the conditions of the catalyst surface. Fouled catalyst may be regenerated by burning off the carbonaceous product, usually with air. In this paper, the mechanisms of coke formation are studied for dehydrogenation of n-butane over alumina-chromia catalyst, and the rate of reaction and of catalyst fouling are determined. The effects of catalyst fouling on the overall efficiency of fixed bed reactors are analyzed with an analogue computer. The concept of the average activity (the fraction of effective catalyst to the total amount of catalyst) is proposed as a satisfactory index in deciding the end point of the reaction period for regeneration.In heterogeneous systems, such simple relations do not exist.This mode! fits the reported findings, provides physical meaning to the parameters of the reported experimental correlations, and indicates the pertinent factors controlling the removal of solids from vigorously bubbling beds.Experimental results show that the average factor of friction and j factor of mass transfer are correlated the same equation with respect to Reynolds number, and that the vertical distributions of local factors of friction in tangential direction and those of mass transfer coefficients are quite similar.

Agreement between the experimental data and the computer results was quite good.Fundamental equations are developed for the complete segregation reactor (CSR) and the maximum mixed ness reactor (MMR) and then analysis with linearized equations is applied to explore the effect of segregation on the stability, sensitivity and frequency response of the reactors. Results are summarized as follows: 1) The CSR is always stable as long as a batch reactor is stable while the MMR is stable if a hypothetical continuous stirred tank reactor which has the mean residence time specified by the exit age distribution function is stable. 2) The sensitivity is very much greater in the CSR than in the MMR for an exothermic reaction. 3) For an isothermal single reaction, the effect of segregation becomes considerable in the range of 1-5O of Damkoler Number and may be ignored outside of this region.

Measurement of the wall pressure was also carried out using a wire resistance strain gage. It has been concluded that when a mass flow of granular materials occurs in the vessel, the pattern of distribution of the wall pressure qualitatively agrees with the theoretical curve except for the region near the hopper outlet, where the effect of dynamic pressure of particles prevails. On the other hand, when plug flow takes place, the wall pressure does not change from the value of stationary state in the upper part of the vessel, while it increases toward the outlet in the lower part of the vessel.Login in here.
